Ah the classic British mentality..
Even when things are completely messed up, we simply go “chin up” and keep on walking…
A lot of things aren’t right in the world right now. Have been trying to get people to spare a thought for Japan at the moment. Boyce Avenue have been selling their cover version of Pink’s “Perfect” and sending all the proceeds to the Red Cross aid support there, not sure if anyone who’s read it really took it seriously… And some will probably download it illegally.
Internally, things aren’t that fantastic either. It has become clear that the exam boards are royally screwing over some students. Take this example:
After taking two papers for English Lan/Lit, I received a high A grade on the first paper and a low C on the second. When my script was requested back and passed around the department, there was a consensus that the answers were perfectly legitimate and merited at least a B. After having it re-marked twice, it was moved to the B threshold, bumping it up to a boarderline A over both papers. I then re-sat the second paper, writing in a more concise manor as they had expressed that they wanted. It returned as a 68/100… another C. The script has now been requested back once again. I will not disclose the exam board, but let’s just say they’ve already had bad press.
Another exam board almost failed my 1st A2 politics exam with an E in the essay question (18/45) which neither my parents, nor my politics teacher will believe. This script has also been requested back, on possible grounds for appeal.
In total, I shall be taking 3 re-sits this year, costing £72.
If I don’t receive AAA, I can kiss my English Degree goodbye.
So forgive me if I’m upset. Forgive me if I don’t act like a regular 18 year old and still get A’s. Forgive me if I refuse to believe that the work that I’m doing is not enough. Someone who I know on good authority did not study for that politics exam, received an A. I know because he pronounced it to the entire class.
There are many students out there who are suffering this same fate. You are not alone. You are not powerless. You are not a statistic.
Maybe this is the problem?
Who knows… but something is definitely WRONG at the moment.
"Mr Cameron and Clegg,
Before you can allow so many university fees to be raised, you need to make sure that there will actually be students there to pay them! If the exam boards are corrupt (Look at the news, it’s not a secret anymore.) then is it not your duty to regulate them? We are facing educational crisis at the hands of profiteers and scholarly gangsters!”
